  15. <p>     DIED. ANTOINE PINAY, 102, French politician who created the
  16. "new franc" in 1960; at his home in Saint-Chamoud. In 1952 Pinay
  17. served a nine-month term as both Prime Minister and Finance
  18. Minister, introducing strict reforms that brought postwar inflation
  19. under control for the first time. In 1958 he was again named
  20. Finance Minister; two years later he renewed the attack on inflation
  21. with the new franc, which he conjured into being by simply knocking
  22. two zeros off the value of the old one.
